GIF Compressor

Shrink an animated GIF by reducing colors, scale or frames. See the new size before you download. Your file never leaves your device.

Your GIF never leaves this device.

How the compression works

The compressor decodes your GIF frame by frame, applies the changes you choose, and encodes a new GIF. Each option attacks a different part of the file size:

OptionWhat it changesBest for
ScaleResizes every frame. 50% scale means a quarter of the pixels.Any GIF that’s bigger on screen than it needs to be
FramesKeeps every 2nd, 3rd or 4th frame and lengthens the delay of the kept frames, so playback time is unchanged.Smooth, high-frame-rate GIFs
ColorsRebuilds each frame’s palette with fewer colors (a GIF palette holds at most 256).Photos and video clips
Skip unchanged pixelsStores pixels that didn’t change from the previous frame as transparent, so the earlier frame shows through.Screen recordings, slides, still backgrounds

Start with scale and frames: they reduce size the most with the least visible damage. Drop colors last, and check the preview for banding.

Honest expectations

GIF’s built-in LZW compression is lossless, so a GIF only gets substantially smaller if you give something up: pixels, frames or colors. A GIF that was already carefully optimized may not shrink much, and occasionally a re-encode is larger, which the tool shows you as a percentage before you download.

Need exact pixel dimensions or a square crop rather than a percentage? Use the GIF resizer. Starting from a video? Convert it with the right settings from the start using WebM to GIF or MP4 to GIF.

Frequently asked questions

How can I reduce the size of a GIF?

The biggest savings come from a smaller scale (fewer pixels per frame) and fewer frames. Reducing colors helps too, especially for photos. Skipping unchanged pixels helps most when the GIF has a still background.

Will dropping frames make the GIF play faster?

No. When frames are dropped, each remaining frame is shown for the combined time of the frames it replaces, so the GIF keeps its original length. Motion just becomes a little less smooth.

Why is my compressed GIF bigger than the original?

Some GIFs are already heavily optimized. Re-encoding one with the same settings can come out larger. Lower the scale or colors, or drop frames; the result panel shows the size change so you can compare before downloading.

Does compressing keep transparency?

Yes. If the original GIF has a transparent background, the compressed version keeps it.

Is there a size limit?

The GIF is processed in your browser, not uploaded, so the practical limit is your device's memory. This tool accepts files up to 200 MB.

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. The file is read, re-encoded and offered for download entirely on your device.
